To date, OCSR has expanded to offer support for primary, secondary and tertiary education with some students attaining Bachelor and Master degrees in various disciplines. Please visit our Alumni page for more information. Orphan Care and Social Rehabilitation is run as a Ministry among the orphans and widows based on James 1:27. OCSR, as a local ministry since 1995 equips orphans and vulnerable children with spiritual mentoring, hygiene and health education, awareness and prevention of HIV infection, behaviour change mentoring, supplementary nutrition support, and resources they need to continue with their education. The formation of the NGO, 30 years ago was based on providing care and support to destitute orphans between the ages of 2 and 6 years and who have been affected by HIV and AIDS pandemic, in order to provide a good foundation for their future development. Currently, OCSR supports children from 3 to 18 years from pre-school all the way to secondary and tertiary education. At the time of inception, no outside support could be solicited because the proprietors were new and did not have any track record. The proprietors, Mr. Crosby Mphande and Mrs. Jenny Mphande regarded this as a mission and therefore invested their own resources. They have maintained this support since then. Through the years with an established track record, and with support of local and international volunteers, well wishers both local (Malawi) and abroad (UK, Canada, South Africa, Sweden, Australia and many more) who have tirelessly offered their support in different ways, Chikondi and Mphatso Orphan Care Centre is still running and will celebrate its 30th Anniversary on 25th August 2025. OCSR has received donation from organisations including food, clothing and other donations from local and international organizations, these have assisted in local running of the centre and feeding the children. Thank you. Our deepest gratitude goes to volunteers at the Orphan Care Centre who make it possible that children are fed and taken care of everyday and ensure that each child goes home well fed and with a smile. Despite dwindling donations since the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, OCSR still kept its doors open and supported the children. Thank you to all who have supported OCSR through the years.
A brief intro on the orphanage
The Farm
Orphan Care and Social rehabilitation believes in sustainability and is working towards achieving this goal. Since inception, the founders, Jenny and Crosby Mphande have been running a farm and orchard where they grow maize (a staple food in Malawi), vegetables and fruits to feed the children in their orphan care centres. With 200kg (4x 50kg) of maize required per month to feed the children, growing the maize was more sustainable.
